2027: Tinubu Is Only Leading Candidate, Election Will Be Easiest, Says Wike
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains the only leading candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election, insisting that the contest will be the easiest for the president because there is no serious opposition.
Wike made the remarks while speaking with journalists in Abuja, where he also dismissed the chances of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi posing a serious threat to Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“I disagree with you that Atiku is one of the leading candidates. You have only one leading candidate, and that is Ahmed Bola Tinubu,” Wike said.
The FCT minister further argued that the 2027 presidential election would be easier for Tinubu than the 2023 contest, attributing this to what he described as the absence of a formidable opposition.
“I have told people that this will be the easiest election. I have said so because we have no opposition. Opposition is not merely because parties have presented their candidates,” he stated.
Wike also dismissed the significance of the opposition’s recent political activities, arguing that the current opposition parties lack the cohesion and political structure required to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the national level.
His comments come as Nigeria’s political parties enter the 2027 election season, with Tinubu seeking a second term amid a fragmented opposition landscape. Reports indicate that opposition figures, including Atiku and Obi, remain prominent names in the emerging contest, although efforts to build a united platform against the president have faced difficulties.
Wike’s position, however, is a political assessment rather than an indication of a predetermined election outcome. Nigerian voters will ultimately decide the 2027 presidential election at the polls.
