In a significant move aimed at improving transportation, enhancing community welfare, and increasing Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), the Executive Chairman of Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area, Barr. Iheukwumere Alaribe, has officially flagged off the Aboh Mbaise Local Government Mass Transit Scheme.
The launch, which took place at the Aboh Mbaise Local Government Headquarters, marks the beginning of what the council describes as a long-term investment in affordable transportation and sustainable economic development.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Barr. Alaribe said the initiative was conceived to address the transportation difficulties faced by residents while creating a dependable source of revenue to finance development projects across the local government.
According to him, the welfare of the people remains the administration’s top priority.
«”As a council, our priority is always the welfare of our people. We carefully thought about how to improve their daily lives while simultaneously finding innovative ways to generate Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). That is exactly what gave birth to this mass transit scheme. Every kobo made here will be reinvested directly into developing Aboh Mbaise,” he said.»
The chairman disclosed that the transport scheme commenced operations with four fully equipped commercial vehicles fitted with luggage carriers to conveniently serve commuters and traders.
He explained that the first phase of the project would operate on the Mbaise–Lagos and Mbaise–Aba/Owerri routes, with plans to extend services to Abuja and other major cities across Nigeria.
«”Every giant stride begins with a single step. We are starting with four vehicles today, but our vision is to expand rapidly and compete favourably with the leading transport companies in the country,” Alaribe stated.»
Barr. Alaribe also commended the Governor of Imo State, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma, for creating an enabling environment that allows local governments to implement developmental programmes capable of transforming their communities.
Looking ahead, the council chairman invited private investors and transport operators to partner with the local government through franchise arrangements, describing the initiative as a viable investment opportunity.
He expressed confidence that strategic partnerships would significantly expand the fleet, generate higher revenue, and accelerate infrastructure and social development within Aboh Mbaise.
The flag-off ceremony attracted government officials, traditional leaders, political stakeholders, and residents. Among those present were the Vice Chairman of Aboh Mbaise LGA, High Chief Donatus Nnamdi Anyanwu; the Supervisor for Works, Hon. Eze Oguzie; the Director of Administration and General Services (DAGS), Mrs. Chinedu Ajagu; the Council Treasurer, Mrs. Francisca Ebere; Hon. Gab Ihenachor; Hon. Odinakachi Nwarukwem, and other dignitaries.
Observers say the mass transit scheme represents one of the administration’s key economic initiatives, with the potential to reduce transportation costs, create employment opportunities, improve mobility for residents, and strengthen the council’s internally generated revenue base.
The Aboh Mbaise Local Government says the project aligns with its broader vision of promoting economic growth, attracting private investment, and delivering sustainable development to communities across the council area.
