The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the Iri-Ji Mbaise Festival 2026 has officially launched the Mbaise Unity Cup, a five-clan football tournament designed to promote youth engagement, peace, unity, and cultural renaissance across Mbaise Nation.
The tournament, which has been introduced as one of the major legacy projects of this year’s Iri-Ji Mbaise Festival, is expected to bring together young football talents from the five traditional clans of Mbaise in a week-long championship that celebrates sportsmanship, friendship, and communal harmony.
According to the committee, football remains one of the most effective platforms for uniting people irrespective of age, religion, political affiliation, or community differences. It is in recognition of this unique power of sport that the LOC adopted the initiative as a means of strengthening the bonds of brotherhood among the people of Mbaise.
The competition will feature representative teams from Agbaja Clan, Ahiara Clan, Ekwerazu Clan, Ezinihitte Clan, and Oke Ovoro Clan, with each clan assembling a squad of talented young footballers to compete for honours while fostering mutual respect and communal pride.
Speaking on the significance of the tournament, Chairman of the Iri-Ji Mbaise Cultural Festival Local Organising Committee 2026, Engr. Chimaroke Ben Nnaji, described the Mbaise Unity Cup as more than a football competition.
“The Mbaise Unity Cup is more than a sporting competition. It is a symbol of our collective resolve to build bridges across communities and clans, and also to demonstrate that our shared heritage is stronger than any differences that may exist among us.”
He noted that the championship aligns perfectly with the values of the New Yam Festival, which celebrates gratitude, harvest, communal living, and peaceful coexistence.
The LOC further explained that the tournament is expected to foster unity and reconciliation among communities, promote friendship and collaboration among youths, discover and showcase football talents within Mbaise, encourage healthy lifestyles, and strengthen community participation in the annual Iri-Ji Festival.
The committee added that the championship will also create excitement ahead of the grand cultural celebration while helping to position Mbaise as a destination for culture, sports, tourism, and investment.
As preparations intensify, the Local Organizing Committee has called on traditional rulers, community leaders, youth organizations, football clubs, corporate bodies, and well-meaning sons and daughters of Mbaise to support the initiative and ensure its success.
The committee also urged all five clans to rally behind their teams and participate actively throughout the tournament as the people of Mbaise come together to celebrate their shared heritage through sports and culture.
The Mbaise Unity Cup 2026 will serve as a unifying platform that reinforces the enduring spirit of brotherhood among the people of Mbaise while creating opportunities for youth development and talent discovery.
