Tinubu Approves Up to 80% Salary Increase for Armed Forces Personnel

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a significant upward review of salaries for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent across various ranks in a move aimed at boosting troop welfare and strengthening national security efforts.

The new salary structure, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit approximately 250,000 military personnel serving in the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force.

Under the approved package, senior officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase. Officers from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer are to enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while personnel from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.

The salary review is expected to raise the annual wage bill of the Armed Forces from N660 billion to N924 billion, representing one of the most substantial welfare interventions for military personnel in recent years.

President Tinubu said the decision reflects his administration’s commitment to recognising the sacrifices made daily by members of the Armed Forces in defending Nigeria against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats.

According to the President, the men and women of the military deserve adequate support and appreciation for their role in safeguarding the nation and protecting citizens.

He reaffirmed that his administration would continue to prioritise the welfare of troops while investing in the modernisation of the Armed Forces through the provision of advanced weapons systems, equipment and technological tools necessary for effective operations.

President Tinubu stressed that security remains a critical pillar of national development, noting that no country can attain sustainable growth and prosperity without peace and stability.

The President also assured Nigerians that the government remains determined to deploy all available military and law enforcement resources to confront security challenges and protect lives and property across the country.

He urged military personnel to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their service and dedication to the nation, expressing confidence that Nigeria would ultimately overcome those seeking to undermine its unity and stability.

The approval marks a major boost for troop morale and comes amid ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to enhance the operational capacity and welfare of security personnel engaged in combating insecurity across different parts of the country.
