The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has paused immigrant visa processing worldwide, temporarily disrupting visa interviews for people seeking to move permanently to the United States.
The U.S. State Department has directed American embassies and consulates around the world to postpone immigrant visa appointments as consular officers undergo a global training programme designed to strengthen the screening of applicants.
Applicants who already had interviews scheduled have reportedly received notifications that their appointments have been postponed. New dates are expected to be communicated later, but the State Department has not provided a definite timeline for when the appointments will resume.
The training is focused partly on determining whether prospective immigrants are likely to become a “public charge” — meaning someone who could become primarily dependent on certain U.S. government benefits.
The State Department has already introduced measures allowing consular officers to require certain immigrant visa applicants to obtain a public-charge bond in cases where officers determine that additional financial assurance is necessary. The latest pause comes amid a wider tightening of U.S. immigration policy under the Trump administration. Earlier in 2026, the State Department paused visa issuance for immigrant applicants from a long list of countries, including Nigeria, under a separate policy concerning reliance on U.S. public benefits.
The administration has also faced legal challenges over its immigration policies. A federal judge recently struck down an earlier policy that suspended immigrant visa processing for nationals of 75 countries, ruling that the State Department had exceeded its legal authority. For applicants affected by the latest worldwide pause, the development could mean further delays after months or years spent completing petitions, documentation, medical examinations and other immigration requirements.
It is important to note that the latest announcement concerns immigrant visa processing and appointments. It does not mean that every U.S. visa category, including all tourist, student and temporary work visas, has been suspended worldwide.
