Reasons Why I Rejected Peter Obi and NDC House of Representatives Ticket — Aisha Yesufu Explains

Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has explained why she rejected a House of Representatives ticket offered to her by the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Yesufu said her decision was driven by principle and her unwillingness to compromise her values in pursuit of political office.

Explaining her decision, Yesufu said she encountered situations where political positions appeared to come with conditions that she was not prepared to accept.

“I did not accept the House of Representatives ticket that was given to me because there were other people who were doing it on the issue of principle,” she said.

According to her, some individuals made political offers with expectations attached.

“There were many issues where many people brought, ‘I will make you this but you have to do A, B, C, D.’ It’s pretty obvious,” Yesufu stated.

She further stressed that she was not desperate to become president or occupy political office at all costs.

“We are not going to sell Nigeria. I don’t have to be president by force. We won’t make any promises that we will not fulfill,” she said.

The comments come amid preparations for the 2027 elections, with political parties and prominent figures positioning themselves ahead of the polls.

Yesufu’s decision to reject the legislative ticket has generated renewed attention, particularly because of her involvement in political activities associated with the NDC and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Her remarks also underscore her position that political participation should be guided by principles and accountability rather than the pursuit of office at any cost.
